Why does the NYT feel the need to get quotes from Gary (Not My Real Name) Mack?

Leslie described the citizens of Dallas: 

“Almost without exception, these are people who feel that their greatest enemy is ...the government of the United States."  

“They feel their worst enemies are other Americans who disagree with them. They are not equipped to deal with contradictory evidence; when it appears, they boo it and hiss it to make it go away.”

Thank god there aren't any people like that around anymore.
