About those CIA records that won't be released until 2017...

I've gone through The Federal Register for 1995 to 1998.  I've printed off every notice of the status of documents that the ARRB looked at.  People have been saying ever since an open meeting of the National Declassification Center that there are about 1% of the 5 million pages of documents in the JFK records collation that are CIA records and are not scheduled for release until 2017.  People have also used a more specific number of 1,117.

Neither figure is correct.  It's more than 1,117.  I think it's a heck of a lot more than a little over a thousand documents.

I will work on creating some useful, and specific information from these notices detailing exactly what has been postponed and withheld until 2017.  People are focusing in on the CIA but there are other agencies that the ARRB dealt with.

People should be mad as hell about the ONI.  There should be a protest march at their HQ.   There should be congressional hearings.  But, there won't be.  The JFK Act is law, but there's no one, and no agency that can or will bother to enforce the JFK Act.  However, I think a case can be made that NARA should and does have the authority to act in this matter.  NARA does have the legal right to investigate and demand that ONI turn records over based on the documentation in the ARRB staff records.  This issue, ONI records, should get more attention than the CIA records being withheld.
