Television networks in India are excellent sources of information on the shooting. The assassin was impatient as he waited for Abe. Once Abe arrived the assailant positioned himself behind Abe and shot him twice. The first shot seemed to have missed. The crowd was startled, including Abe who then turned around and was frontally shot with the second shot. There was a pause of a second or two between the shots.
I don't know much about Abe or the policies he supported. It's just that this cowardly attack pisses me off.
Why was such a man, twice the Prime Minister of Japan, standing on a ridiculous red box in what is really the middle of a busy intersection as if he was auditioning to be a traffic cop. It's a spot where there are a lot of commuters going to work. The attack was at about 11:30 a.m. local time, I believe. This would be similar to having a candidate shaking hand as a shift of employees arrived to go to work in a factory.
This was a major security failure, a major intelligence failure. He should have been better protected.
I think there's a hell of a lot more to this assassination than an ex-sailor who was "dissatisfied" with Abe. The assassin knew Abe's security wasn't worth shit. He knew where Abe would be. He didn't give a shit about being caught either.
At about 19:20 an Indian presenter notes the total lack of any security around Abe.
